Well… I would say Bonnaroo 2010 but… that one’s taken! Or, DEMF (my first festival experience) but that one’s taken too! So, I’d have to go with Hangout Music Fest 2011 down in Gulf Shores, AL. I ended up Volunteering for the festival due to a lack of appropriate funds to purchase a 3-day pass but boy was it worth it! It was awesome to see what happens on the other side of the festival besides just bouncing from show to show…
The first day of the festival I worked in the Artist Relations tent. I gave all the bands their credentials as well as took their luggage. I met the guys from Easy A All-Stars, Big Gigantic, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals and so on. Wish I could have met Grace, the love of my life, but beggars can’t be choosers, or so they say. Then, at 7pm I was free to go check out all the rest of the shows for the night!
The second day I worked the Disability Tent, another great experience. There was a man who had just been diagnosed with Prostate Cancer, his name was Rick and he was only given 4-6 months to live. What better ways to spend your waning days on this planet than heading to a beach for a music festival?? Rick was truly an inspiration to me. He shared stories of his 20′s seeing people like Hendrix, Pink Floyd, the Dead, The Doors… The list kept going on and on! I felt like I was living vicariously through his past! Rick ended up buying me beers all night and his 14 year old son was really getting a laugh out of my antics. They had never seen the Flaming Lips before so I made sure to walk them to the other stage and snagged them a good spot in the other Disability Tent. I didn’t catch them after the show however…
The last day of the festival I work as a bartender in the VIP tent. Probably poured 2,500 Mimosas. I wasn’t mad about that at all. I was off by 2pm and was able to make it to the front row for the Black Keys then walked about 500 yards down the beach to catch Paul Simon. It was the first time I had ever seen either of those acts, both of which are in my top 10 artists of all time. Oh, and on my way to Paul Simon I stopped by the Disability Tent and sure enough there was Rick and his family!
After giving him one last hug I met up with my group (30 people deep) and listened to Paul Simon tell stories and sing the festival to a close.
Volunteering was an incredible experience. I met some awesome people, some of whom I’m still in touch with. I got to see some of the behind the scenes action that goes into putting on a music festival. And not to mention I got to go for free!
I hope to win this contest as I’m in kind of in the same position financially as I was a year ago this time. I’m in my last year of school, going to graduate this year, and funds are tight these days. Maybe yall could help me get to see Afrojack?!?! Always wanted to see him, Flux, Benny Benassi, Carl Cox and so on! If not I’m sure who ever wins the contest will totally be deserving!
One love, always.

The best festival experience I have ever had was my first festival ever, Bonnaroo 2010. It was a life changing event because of the great people I went with (Roo crew) and I discovered an ungodly amount of music that I had never heard before. Most of the bands I discovered that weekend are still some of my favorites today. I’m not sure I would have the same love for music or the passion to always be looking for new music if I hadn’t attended that year.
The journey began the Wednesday night before when 12 of us loaded up the cars and left St Louis for Tennessee around Midnight. After driving through the night we reached our destination only to realize that we would be waiting in a line of cars for at least 2 hours. To pass the time we got out of our cars threw the football around and drank heavily with the other festy kids. This in turn led to us trying to set up our tents drunk in the pouring rain a little later in the afternoon. After the much longer than it should have been process of setting up our campsite, we headed out to Centeroo to pick up supplies and then into the festival.
Going into the festival on Thursday, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I hadn’t heard of any of the bands before, so I was just following the Roo crew around. Just so happens I discovered a number of my favorite bands that day. We started off at the “THAT” Stage to see The Local Natives and then Neon Indian. After that we headed over to the “THIS” Stage to see Miike Snow as the sun was going down. After that we closed out Thursday night with The XX and then Afrojack. Of course you have to add a little Silent Disco to finish off the night. Thursday was quite the day, so we stumbled back to our tents (this takes awhile as it is impossible to find your campsite when you are out of your mind at 4 in the morning) to get an hour of sleep before the sun came up.
Thursday was a good start, but it was Friday and The Flaming Lips LCD Soundsystem combo that changed my life. After heading down to Centeroo to get our daily supplies, we headed in early to catch some of the World Cup game. Then we spent the day at the “That” and “Other” stages catching The Black Keys and Edward Sharp and the Magnetic Zeroes. It was also my first of many Umphrey’s shows that day at the “Which” Stage, but it was so damn hot I can hardly remember it. By the time the Flaming Lips came around, the Roo crew had all purchased light sabers so we could find each other in the dark. It was my first lips show and I have to say they put on one of the best live shows ever. After playing some of their songs they set into Dark Side of the Moon. This was a treat for me because I have always loved me some Pink Floyd. During money they even threw out huge balloons of autographed $5 bills. We tried so hard to pop those damn things with our light sabers, but later found out that lighters were what did the trick. I’m pretty sure there were moments I was crying during the show. I think it was a mixture of the great music and the illicits. At the end of the show during Brain Damage I noticed a girl start getting close to me. Next thing I know we are in a full on make out session. When I looked up I saw the Roo crew staring at me and noticed then that this girl was not that attractive. I think the term we could use here is speculative at best. So after the show I had to get outta there quick and as I was running around the Roo by myself to escape I ran into the “This” Stage where LCD Soundsystem was playing. This was the greatest dance party ever and where I discovered one of my favorite bands to this day. Friday night was one hell of a night. And again, we partied till the sun came up.
I wasn’t sure if Friday could be beat, but Saturday was when I saw the Mau5 for the first time. We made it to The Avett Brothers, Kaskade, Thievery Corp, and the Disco Biscuits. All incredible shows, but the one I remember most is Deadmau5 until the crack of dawn. As we were dancing our asses off, I noticed a girl coming close to me. And I’ll be damned if it wasn’t that same girl I made out with at the lips show! So just like that I was off running through the crowd trying to hide the glow from my light saber and get away from this girl. I was successful in evading her and spent the rest of the Mau5 show damn near in the 1st row. By this time, we were not even going back to our camp, so parked my butt under the peace tree around 5 in the morning and took a little nap to get ready for Sunday.
Sunday was a lot more relaxed and a great way to end the craziness that is Bonnaroo. Caught John Butler twice, Phoenix, and the Dave Matthews closed out the night. Much more relaxed then the first three days, but I needed it.
All in all Bonnaroo was an amazing experience. Met a million cool people and saw more incredible shows in one weekend than I ever had before that in my life. The atmosphere is not like anything I have ever seen. I recommend everyone who loves festivals to do the Roo at least once. I know will go again. Had to sell my ticket due to things coming up I had to attend this year. If you ever go, just make sure to bring the essentials and prepare yourself for the craziest weekend of your life.

My best festival experience would have to be this last weekend when I went to summer camp. The night before my friend got extremely blacked out and ended up buying a ticket but he had no way of getting there and had never been to a festival so i did what i needed to to get him there. Once he was there I did not stop having an absurd time till it was over. I cant remember a time when I wasn’t cheesing just because of the people that were with me. But the overall thing that made this past weekend absolutely amazing was the group rage stick Squidmo. At every show someone would come up to us and tell us a story about how they love Squidmo or how the night before this girl took an hour long video of him dancing. The absolute best moment was when 12th planet gave Squidmo a shout out, he called him elmo but then the entire crowd just yells, “ELMO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” The energy from that made it possible for everyone in my group to just keep dancing through the 120 heat that was the crowd. I have never been so close to passing out in my life and I loved it.

Short and sweet. Best last min decision to leave school 24 hours before ncmf 11′. I will always cherish the memories of running around outside fucked up in the rain with my best friends listening to a great line up of artists. If I won samf Tix I intend to on participating in similar activities as listed above (including the last minute decision part) #yolo #danklesmakeithappen!!

Maybe not exactly a festival, but my shining moment came at Beyond Wonderland 2010 in San Bernadino. I had gotten separated from my friend Manny who also happened to be my ride. At the time I wasn’t concerned because I had met two beautiful girls and was enjoying their company. We raged to Paul Van Dyk until the lights came up and all started heading to the exit.
I pulled out my phone to get in touch with Manny only to discover that my battery was dead and I didn’t have his number memorized. I wasn’t worried because we had planned for such an event and I headed to our predetermined meeting spot, a glowing sculpture that looked like a rocket ship. On the way I discovered that the girls’ ride had left without them and they were stranded.
Wanting to be seen as the hero I offered them a ride in my yet to be found ride. We spent 15 minutes looking for the sculpture but to no avail, so we went towards the place where I thought Manny was parked. We later found out that the sculpture had moving parts and had morphed into another shape confusing both Manny and myself.
Me and the two girls left the concert grounds and headed towards the parking lot and wandered around there for a while. At this point it was getting cold so we decided to stop in a little burrito place to warm up before venturing back out on the street in hopes of spotting his car.
With a burrito in hand I stared out the window hoping to see the white truck that had brought me to Wonderland. My moral was low because here I was with two girls I was trying to save, both decked out in furry boots and bikinis, freezing and frightened, just wanting to get home. I get up to throw away my burrito wrapper when in walks Manny with food on his mind.
“I’d never leave you bro,” he says as he takes his first bite. I was never happier to have such a good friend. Then he sees the two girls huddled behind me and a quizzical look comes over his face. I smile coyly and tell him that I promised to drive them home. He asks where they live, a question that I had neglected. Turns out they lived an hour and a half North. Figures, we were headed back to San Diego to the South.
He begrudgingly drives them all the way home in the wee hours of the morning and me all the way back to SD as the sun is coming up. We listened to loud EDM the whole way to stay awake and I nodded in and out of consciousness with the satisfaction that I made the night of two random strangers.
When you have faith in the crowd and faith in your friends, you can just let go at a festival and for a few hours drift with the music and the masses. The current takes you everywhere you need to be. And, at the end, you can look back and retrace the crazy steps you took and feel proud to be a part of a movement that at its core is compassionate and harmonious. I never gave up hope. EDM and friendship saved the day.

My best festival experience was at Lollapalooza 2009. It was my first festival ever and it was truly captivating. Of course it rained a lot that friday which it seems like it has been happening a lot over the past few years at lolla! but that first festival was fucking magic. I finally discovered what it meant to just lose yourself in a crowd of everyone and to let go of your inhibitions. I made some awesome friends, a 63 year old security named stan, a couple from colorado, and a little three year old girl named Zooey who joined me, my best friend, my sister, and her boyfriend in an epic dance party. People came and joined our little dance group as the rain came down, just bobbing along. That was the year I discovered Perry’s at Lolla. It wasn’t that big of a tent yet (Perry’s is going to take over Lolla this year, I can feel it =)) but it helped me rediscover my love my electronic/techno music. I fucking came home baby!

To be honest I hated all things EDM up until about 5 months ago. My boyfriend, frustrated with my unwillingness to change and lack of appreciation towards his favorite music genre, somehow convinced me into going to a Zed’s Dead show. In that 4 hours of sheer happiness I experienced a 180 degree metamorphosis with my opinion on EDM. Now my complete obsession allows my boyfriend to give me copious amounts of shit for being a hypocrite but if it weren’t for him I may have never been introduced into this magical scene. SO.. please help me return my gratitude by granting me the honor of taking him to Spring Awakening (aka my first EDM festival!!)

So my best festival experience was Skrillex’s Mothership Tour in Chicago at the Congress.
So Me and two buddies from school take the short trip from south chicago. We first get there early to find parking and we find this shady lot about two blocks down. This guy owned a lot and figured he’d make some money. So its this mud filled lot with broken barb wire fences and we start pulling in thinking oh jeeze we hope the car’s still going to be here when we’re out. As soon as I open the door my ticket goes flying out across the parking lot. So I chased it across without even thinking and i run into a huge mud puddle and destroyed my gray suede pumas. and my ticket is soaked. This is about an hour or two before the doors even open.
So then we start walking towards the venue and then this crack head starts following us asking if we had any extra tickets. As chicago natievs we know to just ignore him, also thinking he probably doesn’t even know what the concert’s for and what the hell would he even do with the tickets? So we keep walking and get in line, relatively close to the doors and proceed to stand there for the few hours until the doors open and just chill admiring the destroyed chicago streets and just talking about the crack head. Then around an hour until it starts the police split the lines into guys and girls. after about 5 minutes i notice this girl stumbling around a few feet from me. She then turns into this space by a garbage can and pukes everywhere. After that she wipes her mouth with her hand and goes back in line with her friends. The police start walking down the lines and the stop about 20 people past me and kick this 14 year old girl out of line for one, being too youg, and two, being so drunk that she couldn’t make it past the curb before falling.
So then we go in and after the first act, dada life performs and gets the crowd started. My friend Sal who hasn’t been to a dance concert starts off the night by being obnoxious with his elbows in our face because he cant seem to get his arms all the way up. He’s also a, husky guy so that didn’t help either. So after a little while of jamming out this group of half naked girls comes by and swoops me from my friends. A blonde starts to dance with me, i’m thinking okay nice! She then turns around and compliments me on my sharpie swag hangin from my shirt. After she asks me something and i couldn’t hear her at first. so I ask “What?” She then shoves her hand in my mouth rubbing her fingers around every part and then shouts “Oragel! It makes your mouth numb and cool!” I’m thinkin I cant believe this shit just happened. So She starts dancing on me again and I’m still in disbelief as I can no longer control my lips and tongue, and im trying not to drool on myself. She turns around and asks be if i feel it yet and then I just try to smile and say “yeah i feel it” she then responds “i know its awesome!” dances some more and then I go to find my friends again.
I find them and they’re all sayin how that was cool that I got kidnapped by them and all can say is i cant feel my mouth. And then i said ill tell them what happened later. so we keen enjoying ourselves and then Dillon Francis comes on and starts playing. After about 30 minutes This brunette girls comes to me and starts dancing. So we’re dancing for about 5 min and then this arm in front of us grabs my arm and locks onto it. There’s another couple dancing in front of us and it turns out its her friend with someone dancing. The brunette then grabs my free hand and starts forcing me to press on her boobs. She then turns and grabs my face and shoves her tongue in my throat and then what do i taste again, oragel. so after getting my face licked i then get pulled in tighter by this girl and her friend. I turn around to see where my friends are and my friend eric gives me a thumbs up. I frantically shake my head trying to tell him nooooo im stuck and it was out of control. But he’s thinking im enjoying all of it, and then she grabs my face and it happens again. She then grabs the guy in front of her that her friend is with and starts making out with him. I’m in shock and i turn to my friend to call him to pull me out of there. So he comes over and as he approaches, she grabs eric and shoves her tongue in his throat! She turns to me and starts sucking on my face and then turns to eric one last time and does the same. Me and me eric are there with horror on our faces and he starts shaking his head in disbelief. But he still doesnt pull me out of there. The brunette latches on my arm for about 5 minutes and then grabs the guy in front of her and holds him, while still stuck by her friends arm. Her friend is then done dancing with the guy and turns around realizing shes been holding my arm this whole time. and trys to tell her that she wants to leave that spot but the brunette refuses for a while. Then she lets go of the guy in front and plants one on me again and says bye and leaves. I turn to find my friend eric thinking wtf terrible wing man.
Then Skrillex comrs on and the projection motion capture display behind him is just awesome. The insane bass drops and wobbling just destroys my ears. It was so awesome feeling that base blow out your chest. Then I figured i spent this money i might as well get to the front. I’m 5’6 so it was pretty easy to get past most of the people but when i got about 5 rows away it turned into a rugby game with people crammed in every spot. I got to the second row where i had to really work to keep my spot. Then this one guy popped up out of nowhere who i saw there all night n hes just like, whats up bro!! yeahhh! and then goes up to this guy who was pushing people and Says ” oh you like pushing people huh? ima fuck you up! and just starts shaking him and shoves him and people are just trying to stop them from fighting and then he leaves. so then after a while i realize i need water so i start heading to the back.
On the way i find eric and we head to the bathroom and drink water from the faucet for what felt about 5 minutes. Then i look down and realize my shoes are now black so 120 bucks went down the drain. So we start heading back and we find sal and head to the middle of the venue and just enjoy ourselves. Then this girl in front of me just falls to the ground and so we start freaking out and her friend turns and says shes just drunk and picks her up. This girl cant even walk and looks like she’s going to puke. Then as they leave, the blonde from earlier sees me and come be to say hi, where now she smells like piss and leaves. A few minutes after that i get to see someone face plant in front of me after a failed crowd surf attempt. He then says fuck this I need to get out of here and we throw him up so he can get to the front. Then after some more dancing this girl comes up to sal asking if he wants some ice with a clenched fist and a cup of water in the other hand, sal looks at me scared thinking she had x so i just say ure and shes’d holding 3 pieces of ice in her hand for some reason and puts them in my mouth, then asks if a want her to pour the water on my head so im just like hell yeah! and oh man that water was so refreshing it was awesome. She then left and my friend was just like dammit i shouldve said yeah. after Myself and eric end up losing sal for the rest of the night until skrillex’s set is over. on the way to the door we find sal purple and ready to pass out, so we get him to the bathroom to get some water where he immediately regains the color in his face. We then get out of there soaked in sweat and who knows what other fluids to about 40 degrees weather along with the good old chicago lake breeze and by breeze i mean hurricane winds. We got back to the car, which was thankfully there, picked up some white castles and headed back to sal’s place where i told them what happened with the blonde and me and eric shared the brunette incident. when we got there i realized how bad my clothes smelled but i didnt care because it was awesome. So many crazy things happened, It was just a night i’ll never forget.

Like many others my story takes place at Lolla 2011. There were a few odd high-points that made the festival a ridiculous experience:
- The first odd experience happened during Collie Buddz’s set. The crowd was going wild of course, and all at the same time, 4 or 5 people around me all collapsed at the same time. First there was a large man that just sort of fainted backwards onto me, then one of my buddy’s went down, as well as a few other people in the surrounding area, creating a sort of domino effect. I suppose it was a combination of heat and too much smoke/drink, but when people start collapsing in close quarters like that, it really gets weird.
- During Skrillex almost the exact same thing happened. My buddy was hitting random people’s smokeables left and right, and all of a sudden he just fell over. He proceeded to crawl over people’s feet till he had some free area to just sit on the dirt ground. I later found him passed out under a tree towards the back of Perry’s tent. This was strange.
- My third and final oddity that happened during Lolla 2011 was on Sunday, when all the rain happened. Right after the train had stopped was when Damien Marley and Nas were starting their show, so naturally that’s where I headed. After helping numerous people out of the mud pits that they were sinking in, I ended up having the only dry lighter that worked among a small group of people that were trying to light up. This was my hero moment, the time in which I was able to play a part in all these people getting high by lending my lighter after everyone else’s had gotten destroyed in the rain. This was a major win on my part!

My best festival experience would have to be the Sunday of Lollapalooza last year. I know so many people say that, because of the rain and all, but it truly was unlike any other experience I’ve ever had. Getting into lolla was fine; it was the 3rd day of one of the best weekends of my life already, and the lineup was still flowing and completely stacked with so many of my favorite artists. I specifically enjoy lolla because the live music is unreal, the people are so nice, there’s delicious food, you get to rage, and being in high school still, it’s nice to not have tl constantly tell my mum where I am and what I’m doing. Instead, I get to do what ever I want for 3 days straight. I feel so free.
On Sunday, I arrived right when it opened. I was just as excited as I had been for all the other days, and I was ready for more. I was with an awesome group of friends consisting of my boyfriend and my best friends in the whole world. We all had the least amount of clothing on as possible, (you know how hot it gets in those crowds under the dry heat of the summer). Funny thing was, that we had no idea today wouldn’t be all that dry. We attended the first few shows, and had a blast. The clouds began to come over head, but rain hadn’t even really crossed my mind. I was too enthralled in the music and atmosphere of the whole festival. I knew that somewhere around there I’d find 3 out of my 4 sisters roaming around, enjoying it just as much as I did.
When the rain hit, me and my friends were at Portugal the Man. I can remember feeling like my insides were throwing a party; not just a little party, but a rager. We danced in the rain, were absolutely care free, and just loving our lives. Things escalated, and we were running around to the happy, joyful music. We got split up with some of the group, so it was me and my two best friends at this point. We were slowly getting wilder and wilder. Then, something felt weird – not on the inside, but on the outside. As I looked down, I noticed that I had one shoe on. I had lost my shoe and my foot was submerged shin deep in mud. I looked for my shoe for about 5 minutes, but realized that it was a lost cause. Not only was that one of my favorite pair of shoes, but it just so happened that they were my sisters shoes. I knew she was going to be pissed, but I wasn’t going to let that ruin my day.
I walked around with one shoe on the rest of the day. On the gravel, on cement, through puddles of brown, slimy mud, on grass – I covered all terrains that day. The day went on, and I still had one shoe. I had accepted the fact that it was gone already. It was not the last show of the night – deadmau5. The rain was coming on again. I felt my one foot sliding around in my shoe, with water squirting through my toes in each step that I took. I rushed up tongue crown anxiously awaiting deadmau5 only to find my sister whos shoe it was. We caught eye contact, and walled up to each other. My thoughts poured out of my brain and flowed through my whole body. I knew she was going to be mad.
“hey dude..” I said kind of bummed. She looked down at my feet immediately and laughed. She took her backpack off, unzipped it, and pulled out the other shoe.
“I knew this was your doing when I saw it trapped in the mud.”
She had found my lost shoe! (her lost shoe I guess..)
I put my wet shoe on, and raged as hard as I could for deadmau5. Sofi came out and performed “sofi needs a ladder”. She absolutely killed it, and I was not comfortably uncomfortable. I was soaking went, still slushing around in my shoes, but absolutely loving it.

Best festival experience…none yet. This summer is finally the summer of me being 18 and FINALLY having all of my freedom. I missed so much last year due to nagging parents and friends who flat out blew me off. This year has treated me well so far, and getting free tickets to Spring Awakening, in Chicago of all places, the city I love, would be fucking unreal. Right now, the only experience under my belt is that of shows at the congress theater. By far best show there was Rusko on NYE. I went with one friend who i was mutually close with, and a limo full of about 5 guys i never hungout with before. After the show on NYE those random people have now become my bestfriends, my family. It just shows how music and a favorite artist can literally change your life for the better. All of my friends are going to spring awakening, as of right now I’m not. I’m doing all I can to spend this epic moment with them, to yet again, live out some crazy shit together.

My best festi experience was Lollapalooza last year. Unfortunately I couldn’t attend all three days, but I did end up going to the last day which fell on my birthday (august 7th)!! Three days before that (the 4th) I attended my FIRST edm concert which consisted of Feed Me, Savoy, and Lucky Date. It was a Logan Square Auditorium, so a pretty small venue, but it was the perfect setting to invite me into the electronic world. Luckily the next day I attended another concert at Congress Theater, Pretty Lights, Skrillex, and some other opener. I literally had no idea what to expect, these two heavy hitters in the EDM world, really anything could happen. Skrillex played a pretty solid set, but I was set off into another dimension when Derek powered up his towers and started his reign over congress. Seeing the magnificent visuals light up the entire stage and venue made me realize that this is where I want to be, and what I want to do with my free time.
SO, after those two concerts I was prepared to experience my first festi (so I thought). The morning of August 7th, I head over to my friends house, pick up a nice little birthday gift, and head over to the train station. My friend, Connor, who was heading down to Chicago with me ended up waking up about 20 minutes before the train arrived. Luckily, he arrived right as the train entered the station. Connor and myself got to Union Station safely, and started to make out way towards Union Park. Fast forwards, and we’re standing front row against the fence at Perry’s. Opening act was Midnight Conspiracy, and boy did they put on a good show! Throughout the rest of the acts, eating some snacks and burning through some doobies, it was finally time to head over to the main stage to catch some Damien Marley & Nas. Being a bigger hip-hop head this was the duo that I had to see! Up against the fence in the left middle, me and my boy were just going all out; jumping up and down, singing almost every lyric, and bobbing our heads until they almost came off. A funny part during this entire time, we decided to pack a bowl. We asked these dudes next to us if they had one they could lend us, and they did. As they were handing it to us, it got knocked out of the owners hand and fell on the other side of the fence into the mud. We were stuck in an awful situation, we couldn’t hop over because a security guard were to the left and right of us and would make us leave to the back. So, i quickly glanced to the security guard to the right and begged him to give us our bowl back. He knew what we wanted and thought he might as well have a little fun with this. He walked around it a few times like he wasn’t able to spot it, and eventually picked it up and lectured us how we shouldn’t be doing this. etc etc, he eventually gave it back with a grin on his face ( a very nice man if i may add). So we packed it up, but then realized that our greenery was drenched. It rained pretty heavily during Damien Marley & Nas’ set…we were screwed! Regardless, we packed it up and tried to spark up. The security guard who retrieved our bowl for us looked and laughed at our failure. Oh, and I forgot to mention that this very same security guard was going just as hard as we were when Nas and Damien were performing, it was definitely a funny sight to see. After their set ended, it was time for some DEADMAU5! We sat down and took a breather, and i popped two tabs and began to wait patiently. As it was nearing the time for Deadmau5 to get on stage, SOFI was weaving through the middle area to head to the stage. For some odd reason, nobody knew who she was (I didn’t even know). But fortunately my friend Connor knew who this lovely woman was, and started to scream for her to come near us! Flattered that she actually ran into some fans, she came over and hugged us both. She told us to enjoy the show, and left for the main stage.
Night was approaching, and a storm was brewing up. Finally it was time, the gigantic cube light up and everyone broke out into screams, laughter, and excitement. A drizzle started to come over Union Park, and the intro to Deadmau5′s set, and as “Where’s My Keys” began to play and the hard hitting bass set in TOTAL DOWNPOUR began. EVERYBODY was literally raging, there was not one face around me that wasn’t having the time of their life. I was launched into another dimension, and experienced a RADICAL, AUDIO & VIDEO, EXPERIENCE. I felt so connected with everyone, and feeling the soft rain cool down my body felt so amazing. His entire set was perfect, and I couldn’t of asked a better way to end my FIRST festival experience.

Best festival experience for me was last year at Electric Forest. On Thursday night, the first night of the festival, we had this torrential downpour and this crazy severe lightning storm. Looking back on it, it probably wasn’t safe in the slightest but it was awesome anyway. Excision was the first artist who was going to play, so we were waiting at the stage for him, in the pouring rain, and every minute or so we would look up at the insane lightning spreading across the sky. It was so beautiful. It’s hard to describe, but it would start at one point, and then branch out rapidly, almost like electric roots growing in the sky. It looked like a big electrical imprint of a tree. It would light up the festival to the point where it looked like it was daylight, just for a few seconds. Then, they announced that we were gonna have to wait for the storm to pass before Excision could play, and we should all probably go back to our campsites…but nobody did. Everybody was way too excited. Then, almost an hour later, the lightening stopped, though it was still raining, and Excision came out and blew us all away. It was so perfect, considering Excision’s style of music – much similar to a thunderstorm in electronic music form. We were all soaked down to our underwear, but the show he put on was well worth the wait. What a great way to kick off the festival.

Omg where do I begin! I was at bassnectar with my date from prom and we were just jamming out when all of a sudden this large (faced) black dude came up and Kissed me on my forehead. Now I’m in a wheelchair so he had to bend down to do that. When he was done he said you are now to be known as simba! And I was like Rollin with it just was like ok man!
Next thing I know he’s askin if he can pick me up and dance with me like a baby , I was like hell yes u can I was only worried about ppl bumping into me, but it was whatever. So he takes off my seatbelt and picks me up and starts dancing. Then he sort of raises me up a bit, and yells “this is simba, king of the bassheads” and everyone went ficking apeshit! That was my best memory at a show and honestly I have a blast everytime I go to shows and get to let my “hair down”

Best music festival would have be to this past years Ultra music festival down in Miami, Florida. I’ve been to local concerts before, listening to same types of music. I’ve actually seen some of the artist before this festival. But nothing can compare to this so far. I’ve never traveled that far just for a concert. It was an experience of a life time. The people, the environment, the performances all made it was it was: amazing. There aren’t really any other words to describe the feelings I felt there. The light show was crazy. The music was an orgasm to my ears. The people were all so friendly and fun to be around. Seeing Skrillex, tiesto, flux pavillion, Avicii, Armin Van Buuren (who I’m seeing May 26th), Bassnectar, steve Akoi, and so many more. It was crazy! I was going crazy and so was everyone else. That entire weekend was just one big dance party that I didn’t want to end. I danced for three days straight. I met new people. Discovered new djs. The experience of a life time. I did things I don’t think I would have ever done before. I stripped for however was watching. I painted my body in glow in the dark paint. Danced with just about anyone who wanted to dance with me. Raged my face off. I think the best part of those days were the night performances because you could see the lights so much better. They tweeked me out and just about everyone else there. I wouldn’t trade this experience for anything else in the world. I had the time of my life. And continue to go concerts whenever I can because I can’t get enough of them. They’re addicting. I can’t wait to go to the spring awakening festival this year. Because it’s in my home town now, and shits going to get crazy!

Best festival, well “only” festival so far I’v been to was North Coast 2011. I never really went to shows before because getting rides was a pain, however, since I went to school in Chicago it was easy to get around the city. North Coast being my first show was more insane than I thought. Basically from 12 pm-10 I raged like I never raged before (because I never raged before lol) and I realised I drank like 5 bottles of water and not once did I go to the bathroom? Basically I raged so damn hard that I sweated out all that water haha. I saw all my favorite acts and I was many drunks have big fail moments, I was surrounded by people that were so free form and drugged out and weird as hell but they turned out to be amazing people. When I got back home took a shower passed out. Next morning I was basically paralyzed my muscles BURNED cause i raged too much. I only had a one day pass so I could not even imagine what the full three would be like. EPIC i’d imagine.

I actually have not been to a big music festival yet but my favorite concert experience so far was seeing BASSNECTAR in Normal, IL on October 1st last year. This place was INSANE! They had to resize the colliseum THREE times to accommodate for the number of people showing up. I have never seen a larger group of people in my life, there was about 7000 people there. I remember first walking inside and seeing all the people on the floor way up top in the seats and it just blew my fucking mind! I had been dying to see Bassnectar for so long and finally, he comes ten minutes to where I go to school at Illinois State University. It was absolutely insane, he killed it all night and had to craziest stage set up I’ve ever seen. The lights were flashing and wild pictures were shining on the screen all night. It was one of the best nights of my life. When I was going to fill up my on water there was this girl who was just laughing hysterically and screaming at this one kid I had no idea why, but she just kept yelling and yelling. All of a sudden this girl just started spinning around and she projectile vomited all over this security guard! she ended up getting thrown out and although I missed some of the show I couldn’t stop laughing my ass off at this obviously wasted girl. I will never forget this show though because I’ve been going to metal and hardcore music shows for my whole life and Bassnectar was my first EDM show and I just couldn’t believe the new world I had journeyed into. It was UNREAL. Hopefully I can have an even greater time at Spring Awakening because I’m dying to see Skrillex, Flux Pavillion, Wolfgang Gartner, Dillon Francis, Kill the Noise, and Everyone else there!

My favorite festival thus far has to be D.E.M.F. (Detroit Electronic Music Festival) in Detroit, Michigan Last year on memorial weekend. Here in the mitten it always rains the last week of May so be prepared to GET WET! =D I promise once the rain starts falling you wont care what your hair looks like nor how soaked your shoes are its all worth it.
My main reasoning for going to D.E.M.F. last year was to see SKRILLEX and to get my dance on. I brought a backpack full of glow, its really all you need to have a good time and a bathing suit which I don’t remember using…but I don’t remember a lot of things! =] We got there around 2 and stayed till 11pm when they shut it down for the night. Then of course you have your after parties which are almost as fun but SOO EXPENSIVE!!! The best after party last year was the “Bitch I’m on a Boat” party 50 dollars to get in and drink all you want. I have never had so much fun on no sleep. The parties go until 5 or 6 am depending on how long you can hang, then get some sleep and do the same thing all over again for 3 days straight!
I would encourage everyone to go to spring awakening the line up is sick! I will be there dancing rain or shine with my girlfriends! Skrillex, Afro Jack, BENNY BENASSI (whom I have never seen IRL) JUST GO! You will be so glad that you made it! I can not wait I have invited all my friends and their friends!!!!
Come dance with us!

My Best Festival Moment was Cage the Elephant at Lolla ’11…..The storm was brewing above the whole fest and soon enough Cage the elephant was coming on……HAS ANYONE EVERY DANCED IN THE RAIN BY THEMSELVES FOR A ARTIST’s WHOLE SET???????? One of the most magical moments during a show for me. During the song Shake Me Down the Rain was FOKING COMING DOWN, i mean storming and the lyrics go,” Even on a cloudy day……even on a cloudy day, even on a cloudy, I keep my eyes fixed on the sun.”- Truly awakened me!!!

Hands down best weekend of my life was last year’s North Coast Music Fest. I was one of the lucky ones to snag the amazing Groupon deal and spent the weekend dancing well over 30 hours to some of the best producers of our time with all my festie friends. Favorite memory was Saturday night at the late night Diplo/Zed’s Dead show where we danced well past 3am. It was a solid 12 straight hours of dancing that day and I loved every sweaty minute of it. That weekend I fell in love with tons of new artists that I hadn’t heard before (STS9, Wolfgang, SBTRKT + a ton more)and I could have died happy as Bassnectar finished it all off. Nothing compares to that togetherness feeling you get from a show like that. Festie love is the friendliest, happiest, best feeling in the world and my summers will forever be full with as many as my bank allows. And hopefully I’ll be adding Spring Awakening to this summer’s lineup.

My best festival experience was Lollapalooza 2011. To understand why I need to give a little back-story. So in the years leading up to 2011 I went through many grueling medical issues and procedures that basically left me in my bed for 2 1/2 years straight. So being bed-ridden for that long had the side effect of building up social anxiety. Once I finally was able to go out and do things, I was met with a great fear of doing so, kind of ironic. Eventually I found out that going to EDM shows with my cousin was something I was comfortable with doing every once in a while. My first one ever was deadmau5 at the very same spot Spring Awakening is taking place at Stadium Green in 2010. So going to these shows occasionally as long as my cousin was there as kind of a social-buffer. Flash forward to summer 2011. We both plan on going to Lollapalooza mainly because of the amazing EDM lineup they had and a few other artists as well. I buy my ticket but my cousin didn’t end up being able to buy his before they sold out. So what was I going to do? I couldn’t just not go like I have done with so many other shows in the past year because I couldn’t find someone to go with, I had spent $200 on the ticket. So I was forced to go. And ended up being able to have an AMAZING time on my own. Everyone I ended up meeting or talking to was so friendly. So because of going to that festival on my own I was able to completely come out of my shell and get rid of my horrible social anxiety and was able to go to shows solo after that as well. And through doing that I’ve met friends that now go to all the same shows as me and I don’t have to worry about rolling solo any more or worry about my anxiety. All thanks to Lollapalooza.

Well, this technically is not a festival story, even though I do have many phenomenal stories from Ultra this past year I won’t get into it because this story is too unique not to pass on to the community. This past weekend on April 14th, I had the craziest day of my life. I left Champaign with 3 of my buddies and drove up to Chicago for the Bassnectar show at Congress. We hit Chicago a few hours before the show, so I had time to run up to the north suburbs real fast to run a few errands
if ya know what I mean. I was in a bit of a hurry, and I was about to get off the highway and everything was looking smooth. I was cruising pretty fast going maybe 65 70 mph and was about to get off the highway, when I was cut off by some asshole and had to swurve into the right lane from the middle lane to avoid him hitting me. My car immediately lost control after i hit the breaks and swurved and I couldnt keep it in the lane, next thing I know I was about to spin off the highway, when my car smashed into the guard rail on the right side of the highway. Airbags deployed, I threw my arms up right before the collision, and somehow I avoided any serious injuries. I was riding dirty and my first thought after realizing I was okay, was FUCK ive got shit in my car. There was nothing I could do other then keep those things hidden and hope that the cops wouldnt search my car. 3 seperate cop cars came, along with an EMT, to dissect the accident and to make sure that I was OKAY. I was in complete shock and was in a bit of pain, but I knew that I did not suffer anything to be seriously worried about. My car was towed off the highway to a gas station, my parents came, and once the cops left my car was cleaned out. My dad, the coolest dad anyone could ask for, drove me downtown last minute, picked up my friends, and dropped us off at congress right in time to see bassnectar. Bassnectars set was probably the best concert I have ever been to. The show was a few days after he dropped his recent album Vava Voom, so I knew that the music would be fresh and new. I just saw him 3 weeks ago at Ultra where he closed out the most epic weekend of my life with a BANG, but this show at congress was a whole other monster. Lorin was up there for 2 and a half hours, kept the amazing vibes flowing thru congress throughout the set, and put on the best set that I have ever seen from any EDM artist. I was melting pretty hard during the show, and I particularly remember a chick pouring a full water bottle down my back when I wasnt looking…..it felt great and was a very generous gift because water at congress is 4$ a bottle. My friends and I left that show in shock and could not have been happier, walked around the congress area in the drizzling rain which was beautiful for about 30 minutes before we scored a cab back to my buddies apartment. When we got there, we cleaned up, got dressed up, took some more goodies, and headed over to the House of Blues for the Bassnectar after party with the Pretty Lights Music Label’s Gramatik, Break Science, and Paul Basic. Once at the HOB, the room was filled with a crowd that was only the very legitimate edm fans in chicago, and the vibes at that show could not have been more real. The music was extrememly chill and was beautiful. Throughout all of this, all I could think about was how lucky I was to be alive, that it was a prayer from above, and I celebrated my life that whole night with my friends and had one of my best nights in years even though I totaled my car(which was not insured, 7500$+ in damages). This story is a perfect example of how pure and amazing this music is, and how inspirational it could be. I WANNA GO TO SPRING AWAKENING, hook a brotha up!!!!

North Coast was my first music festival. I went last year on an entirely impulse decision. My friends who go to school closer to home had been planning on going for a while, but I would be down state at school and not able to go. As the date was getting closer, I started looking at the lineup and realized it was just something I could not miss. Luckily it was Labor Day weekend, so finding a ride home was not an issue at all. I only went one day, but what a day it was! I was just starting to get into electronic music, but it definitely influenced me to get way more into the genre. We saw Big Gigantic for the first time and they put on such an absolutely incredible show that we ended up seeing them two more times before the end of the year (well, technically the third time was on New Years Eve, so partially in that year and partially in this year). Such an incredible experience. I already bought tickets for Lollapalooza and have intentions on returning for three days of North Coast this year. Cheers!

My best festival experience was Sunday of Lollapalooza 2011. My friends and I could not decide between the headliners Deadmau5 and Kid Cudi, so within their hour and a half set we ran back and forth between the main stage and Perry’s 5 times. Did I mention it was absolutely pouring? We were drenched and caught in a few mud fights between the two stages, but I’m happy to say that I saw both artists perform their hits and ended my night with Deadmau5 mixing Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger. What a night!

My best festival experience was in 2010 at the Hard Fest in NYC. This was my first time in New York City with one of my close friends and the show was being held on Governor’s Island, which you get to take the ferry to from Manhattan. I thought this was really cool because you could see downtown New York from far away as the sun was setting and it looked beyond beautiful. Destructo was the first dj I caught at the main stage and I did not stop dancing from the beginning of his set until Die Antwoord got off the stage. This was the first night that I saw Borgore, Skream, and Benga perform and I was blown away by the awesome dubstep vibes they brought. MIA was the final headliner of the night, and towards the end of her set was when the craziest thing happened. A nice storm started to roll in along with some big wind gusts. Tents set up with water/concessions were being flipped over and swept away into the air, it was just insane. MIA kept performing until some security staff finally grabbed her because all of the equipment was getting wet and the stage was looking it it was going to fall apart. The rain only lasted maybe 20 minutes and then everyone started heading back to the ferrys. It was a great ride back to Manhattan and since NYC is one of my favorite cities I just walked around with my friends for a little bit until we headed back to my friends apartment to get some sleep. I will never forget this adventure. It still remains one of my fondest memories and the week I spent in NYC made me want to live there at some point in my life.

Oh man, this is one of the easier questions to answer.
Bonnroo 2011. It was my first Bonnaroo, and the start of festival season for me. Me and my friends made the brutal drive from Chicago just fine. We had a pickup truck and 4 guys. Filled to the brim with survival equipment, sunscreen, water bottles and clothing we were ready for the best 5 days of our lives. And it was…everything from a Pretty lights set that was from 2:30 am to sunrise (5:30 am), seeing Robert Plant of Led Zeppeling sing his lungs out…and the highlight…singing along with Arcade Fire’s Wake up with 70 thousand other people behind me, under the stars, and a tear streaming from my eye. I don’t care how cheesy that sounds, there are moments of pure happiness, and that was one of them.

Ahhhhh, summer is finally on the horizon. That can only mean one thing: FESTIVALS.
In past years, festivals have grown exponentially and the first festival I ever attended was located in Noblesville, Indiana. As I stood in line, I began contemplating the magnitude of this event. I told myself, “This is your first fucking festival.” I was overcome with excitement and I was certainly happy to share this experience with my brother Mario. We couldn’t believe we came this far, after such a spontaneous decision just a day prior! Anyways, as we approached the Dim Mak stage I could literally feel the bass surge throughout my body. Somehow, my friend and I made it to the fences and witnessed a plethora of artists throw down the house. Datsik was going ape shit, and had most definitely brought “King Kong In Tha Truunk.” Just as I thought my day couldn’t get any better, Steve Aoki successfully made my first festival experience legendary. I feel as if I tell the “Steve Aoki” story at least once a day. It was on the fences, when he leaped off stage and approached the crowd. With an uncorked bottle of champagne in hand, Steve was looking for the biggest bass head, the loudest fan. He was searching for someone who was enjoying his show just as much as he was. And then it happened. After yelling at the top of my lungs, trying to get Aoki’s attention, I heard the cork pop and witnessed Steve chug that bottle, like a baby chugs his or her bottle. Next thing I know, myself, my friend, and the smoking hot babes beside us were dripping with ice cold champagne.
Needless to say, my first festival was quite the success, but hopefully Spring Awakening will go above and beyond my expectations.

The best festival experience i have ever had was going to the first stop of Identity Festival in Noblesville, Indiana in August 2011. After going to Lollapalooza and the various after parties i was craving so much more and i had to attend one more festival, but the only problem was that i was going to move away to college 4 days later. So i went onto facebook and scrolled through music lovers only, a group that my cousin started, to browse through some tunes. Thats when i noticed that my friend was selling two tickets to Identity festival the next day. As i stared at this post and idea popped in my head that i may be able to attend another festival after all. So i called my friend Paul up and told him to come over. After explaining to him about the festival and how it was only a 4 hour drive away we decided that we would leave for indiana in the morning to go rage. After making sure we had all the necessities we headed out on the road and soon hit construction an hour later. After driving for what seemed forever we arrived in what seemed to be a deserted town that turned into a huge electronic music festival! As soon as we got in we headed over to the Dim Mak stage to go see The Crystal Method, Datsik, Nero, and then finally to wrap it all up there me and my friend paul got champaigne spit into our faces by the one and only Steve Aoki!! When Steve Aoki had finally finished demolishing us, we heade over to the main amptheater to check out a chicago-native, Kaskade! Kaskade had the standout set of the night and his light show was unreal. The festival turned out way better than i had ever expected and after being such a last minute decision i couldnt have been more happy than the decision i made to go. The only hiccup on the entire journey was when we were 30 mins away from arriving home to my house and we ended up getting pulled over and my friend paul got a $125 ticket for speeding. Otherwise the journey was a complete success and me and my friend paul to do this day wish we could go back just one more time to be front row at steve aoki raging til we cant anymore.

I have unfortunately never been to a music festival. But I do have a best concert experience which would have to be seeing Skrillex in 2010 (I think 2010?) at the Belly Up in Aspen. I know there is a lot of hate on Skrillex but he was a huge step for dubstep and although I am not as big of a fan as I used to be I still like his music. Anyway I went to the concert with my best friend for the past 5 years and did not sit down or even leave from the front of the stage for the entire night from opening act Ecto Cooler to Skrillex’ last song, With Your Friends. We were whomping the entire night, 5 hours straight, I thought I was going to die of dehydration. My friend and I were dripping sweat so naturally we went shirtless for the last three hours or so. Apparently we started a trend as all around us at the sold out venue guys and girls were stripping down. Finally Skrillex put the last song on and he jumped down into the crowd and started posing with fans with his flip video camera. My friend and I went arm and arm with Skrillex, absolutely drenched from dancing but still running on the high from the concert. We left practically unable to walk because our legs were cramping up and unable to speak because we were so dehydrated. Still I remember that night as one of the best moments of my life.

Best festival experience would have to be last year at Pitchfork Music Fest at Union Park. I managed to snag a VIP pass, being able to go backstage, where a lot of the performers were kinda just all hanging out, super chill and lax. there were amazing performances by Cut Copy, Zola Jesus, TV on the Radio, OFWGKTA, (meet Tyler The Creator) side stage views of all the stages, it was all super pimp. But the best would be at the end, on Sunday after all three days. Leaving the fest, going to an after party and heading back home, running into all of TV on the Radio just walking down Ashland street not far from the fest, just hanging out. Shook their hands, talked to them briefly, but was too star struck to ask for a photo. Still kickin myself for that one. They were all super cool and nice and didn’t seemed too bothered. Kinda proof you don’t need VIP to have awesome moments like that.
