When I first saw the tracklist for Kendrick Lamar’s debut album, I immediately took note of the track produced by Hit-Boy, the man responsible for hits such as “Niggas in Paris,” “Goldie,” and “Clique.” Now with less than a week away until the release of one of the most anticipated rap albums of the year, Kendrick decided to show this track to the world. Let us be the first to tell you, it exceeds its already high expectations. “Backseat Freestyle” reminds me of the first time I heard Kendrick’s “Sex With Society” or “Cartoons & Cereal” in that it is unlike anything else in the hip-hop world; it pushes the boundaries of the genre right in front of your eyes. good kid, m.A.A.d city drops October 22nd, and you can bet that this album is going to change hip-hop the way Nas’ Illmatic or Dr. Dre’s The Chronic did.
