There was a huge amount of anticipation surrounding The xx‘s follow-up to their spectacular debut album, and many felt that the stripped-down, minimalist approach to the new album didn’t live up those expectations. While the UK trio had always been known for empty spaces in their songs, Coexist took this concept to the extreme and resulted in an album that felt like something was missing. After hearing Jamie xx‘s new edit of the single “Sunset,” it is now clear that his production is what the new album needed more of. It takes the simplistic rhythm of the original and weaves new layers of beats in and out that keep it incredibly interesting for the entire 6+ minute duration of the song. While I enjoyed Coexist, I hope that the next album sounds more like this.
