2012 was a huge year for female-led electronic groups, with Grimes and Chromatics topping almost every indie blog’s best-of lists. This has paved the way for smaller groups to gain more attention, and the new abum from Blue Hawaii, Untogether, will undoubtedly be talked about in the same light this year.
The lead singer of Braids has teamed up with producer Agor to put together beautifully crafted songs created in the same way as Purity Ring‘s Shrines and The Postal Service‘s Give Up. Namely, the two sending tracks back and forth to each other.
The group takes notes from fellow Canadian Grimes, but slows down the tempo and allows the acoustic melody to resonate with chopped-up vocals and let Raph Standell-Preston beautiful vocals shine. Untogether comes out this March, and after hearing an advance copy of it, I can safely say (even though it is only January) that this will be one of my favorite albums of the year.
