Back in early 2011, British crooner James Blake released a self-titled LP that would turn out to be one of my favorites of that year. It’s often cited as the most pivotal work in the bubbling genre of post-dubstep, but the reason it was so appealing to me was the combination of singer/songwriter techniques with the vibey downtempo aura of his electronics.
Well, Blake is back and gave BBC Radio 1’s Zane Lowe the first taste of his upcoming album, Overgrown, out April 8. The track is “Retrograde” and is a bit more rhythmic and purposeful than his previous work. Stream it below.
The track begins around 1:00.
