For those of you not in-the-know, Quasimoto a.k.a. Lord Quas, a.k.a. Lord Qwayz is one of Madlib‘s several monikers (i.e. Yesterday’s New Quintet, Loopdigga, Otis Jackson Jr. Trio, Monk Hughes, etc.) This psychedelic, pitched-up moniker was created by using slowed down hip-hop beats to rap over, and then speeding up the whole track to achieve the signature “Quasimoto sound” (this was before transposing was available!). Recorded during a week-long mushroom binge, the alias’s first album, The Unseen, achieved worldwide critical acclaim for it’s unique and progressive sound.
Twelve years and two albums later, Madlib has announced the release of the third full-length Quasimoto album entitled, Yessir Whatever (due to release on June 18th). Unlike the previous two releases, which were completed in just weeks, this LP features 12 tracks that have been recorded over the past 12 years. Quasimoto’s single for the upcoming album, “Planned Attack,” was released today, and it features much of what we’ve come to love from Lord Quas; tight production with Madlib and Quas swapping verses back and forth. Being the first time that we’ve heard from Quas in almost a decade, it’s awesome to see that Madlib still holds true to the sound.
Be sure to pre-order the album below, and keep a look out for singles to be released in the coming months!
