The originator of West-coast G-house, Upstroke (who we had an interview with recently HERE), has teamed up with Mexican-based MEXA Records to produce some of his funkiest tracks yet! Just in time to kick off Summer, the Dream Girl EP will be released Monday, May 20th, and has Upstroke’s signature sound throughout. With a disco-influenced sleazy house vibe, the fresh and distinctive sound is truly hard not to dance to.
The EP starts off with the title track, “Dream Girl,” which features dreamy high synths and a bouncy, extremely funky bassline. This track really picks up when the soulful transposed-down R&B vocals and wailing West-coast synth kicks in. “I See You” comes in next with a rolling, dark bass layered beneath another great selection of R&B vocal samples. The break down contains a funk-influenced guitar before exploding into a vicious groove that’s a little more uncommon to the historically darker “MEXA sound”. “California Love” closes out this amazing EP with a gangster, 80’s, West-coast vibe. This track is a little lighter than the first two, but still manages to make you move. The EP overal is a great series of “secret weapons” for DJ’s, and is guaranteed to get the dancefloor moving!
Upstroke has been on a roll lately, with a series of releases showcasing his unique sound lined up in the future. MEXA Records is still a relatively young imprint, but has already released some of my favorite tracks in the past couple of years. Upstroke and MEXA are not ones to sleep on, so be sure follow them on SoundCloud and Facebook for their latest updates!
