Death Grips is an interesting band to be a fan of; I love the loud, don’t-give-a-fuck attitude on their albums- and even take a little enjoyment out of seeing them release their album (with a very NSFW album art) for free when their label kept pushing it back. But now they are dropped by Epic Records, and have their fans turning on them and destroying their equipment after they failed to show up at a Lollapalooza afterparty, which later just turned out to be a publicity stunt.
It’s hard to hate them for too long though, especially when they release amazing tracks like “Birds” without any warning or explanation, a song which may or may not end up on a speculative 2014 album. This is one of the most accessible tracks they have put out, but that doesn’t mean they’ve lost any of their style. There’s blaring horns and swear words galore, but under the effected vocals of MC Ride, there are beautiful melodies and perfectly crafted drums by Zach Hill that control the energy of the song. Many may not like the band as people or characters, but it’s difficult not to turn this up as loud as the speakers go and let Death Grips take you on an insane, loud ride.
