Emoh Instead – aka 1/2 of Flume‘s more dance-floor oriented project What So Not – really comes into his own with his Say So EP. Emoh instead hasn’t exactly risen to the level of recognition that his collaborator has achieved, which isn’t too surprising when you take a look at his back-catalog. While Flume has arguably set the tone for forward-thinking beat music this year, Emoh Instead’s output has been largely focused upon club edits and mashups, in lieu of original material. Don’t get me wrong – the majority is quality material that is sure to get the crowd moving, but this EP takes his sound in an entirely new direction that is much more readily influenced by his cohorts in the Australian beat scene (think Ta-Ku, L D R U).
“Why Can’t You (Say so)” is an innovative slice of future rnb goodness. Emoh takes some of the more club-oriented aspects of his sound (the trap chants, the signature synthesized horns) and blends them with some heart-felt sampling that wouldn’t sound out of place on a UK garage record. What really surprised me though was the passionate, emotive aspect of the tune brought out by Emoh’s daft selection of melodies and chords progressions Understandably, it is very “Flumey” in its presentation and accessibility, but this is a huge step forward for a guy who was making solid edits of Big Chocolate and AntiSerum just a year ago.
“Out to Dry” is simply a monster of a tune. Emoh Instead opts to blend a disparate range of influences to produce a refreshing, yet familiar cut. From the double time break that opens up the tune, to the lush, ethereal chords that sit perfectly underneath Nicole Miller’s beautiful soprano, this tune really is something else. A lot of “trap” producers these days are attempting to find a mid-way between poppy, festival friendly tunes and envelope pushing material, but “Out to Dry” simply nails it. Rolling high hats and plodding 808s in the drop provide a welcome contrast to the more uplifting sections that dominate the rest of the track.
Overall, this is a huge move for Emoh Instead, peep the EP in its entirety below, released through Sweat it Out Records.
