BEAST COAST! For those of you who don’t know the 18 year old brooklynite known as Joey Bada$$, you’re doing something wrong. Claiming instant fame with his release of mixtape, 1995, in summer 2012, Joey Bada$$ has established himself one of the most prominent members of the BEAST COAST takeover currently happening in New York. The same Brooklyn streets that produced The Notorious B.I.G., Jay Z, and Busta Rhymes have been re-vitalized with the emergence of groups such as Pro Era, The Flatbush Zombies and The Underachievers all coming out of the Flatbush neighborhood.
My favorite music is and always will be 90’s rap; there simply isn’t anything that does it for me like some Illmatic or Life After Death. With the deaths of Tupac, Biggie, and Big L, the golden age of rap died along with them. I was not happy with the state of rap and the direction it took from ’97-2011 with (in my opinion) mainstream rap going to complete shit. With that being said, it seems as though the second “Golden Age” arrived in 2012 when rappers such as Joey Bada$$, Kendrick Lamar, Danny Brown, and A$AP Rocky brought the mainstream to them as opposed to changing their sound to appeal to the mainstream. It seems as though lyricism is finally cool again and rappers are pushing each other to break boundaries previously untouched.
Joey Bada$$ put out mixtape, Summer Knights, this past summer that was looked over by many, but deserves some serious recognition. Joey sounds like he popped out of a late-90’s time capsule put together by Nas and Jay Z due to his ability to capture the boom-bap sound of New York from 15 years ago. Joey rips it up in the first verse on this track and is followed by The Underachievers’ Issa Gold, The Flatbush Zombies’ Meechy Darko, and Chuck Strangers. This two song EP of unreleased tracks will be available via iTunes tomorrow.
