Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE) rookies, Isaiah Rashad and SZA, unveil their first collaboration together in “Ronnie Drake”. Earlier this year Kendrick Lamar mentioned TDE had signed a new young rapper to the label, but did not specify who. Speculation began to rise as who who this prestigious label fathering the Black Hippy crew (consisting of Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul, Schoolboy Q, and Jay Rock) had brought onto their team. Although I consider the Black Hippy crew to be the most talented rappers in the game, they also like to fuck around and misled the internet as to who the new signee was multiple time. Both Ab-Soul and Schoolboy Q had tweet saying that Mac Miller and Action Bronson were signed to Top Dawg, just to fuck around with people. Rumors started surfacing suggesting that Isaiah Rashad was the young gun TDE added to their lineup, and they were confirmed with the official video for “Shot U Down” released mid September (read here).
Back in April, SZA dropped her S EP (read here) and intrigued my interest in this forward thinking, lulling R&B artist. I couldn’t have been any happier with the selection they made for the addition of a female vocalist as she became a favorite of mine this past spring. Following the release of singles “Julia“(read here) and “Teen Spirit”, TDE released this video showcasing their new vocalist to the world.
“Ronnie Drake” was produced by Antydote, who has produced numerous beats for Isaiah previously, and mixed by TDE’s own Ali. This relaxing beat has me eagerly awaiting more collaborations from the newest TDE members as SZA’s lulling voice on the hook perfectly compliment Isaiah Rashad. I believe the six artists shown above are the faces of the future of hip hop. I would make the claim that if black hippy ever made a group album, it would rival 36 chambers. I put TDE on a pedestal above all other rappers and honestly never thought another would be signed, but I’m glad they added these two and am eager to see what is next to come for my favorite label.
