Top Dawg Entertainment’s first release out of 2014 is debut mixtape, Cilvia, from newcomer Isaiah Rashad. The prestigious rap label representing the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q, Ab-Soul, Jay Rock, and SZA is rumored to have as many as six releases coming our way in 2014. When I frist heard that Top Dawg signed a young rapper this summer I was hopeful for Chance The Rapper, but was pleasantly surprised with Isaiah Rashad . This 22 year old Chattanooga, Tennessee native had a monumental year in 2013 as he became a father and was recruited by the Dr. Dre affiliated rap label. Not many 22 year olds get to hang out with Kendrick and smoke with Schoolboy Q & Dr. Dre. With the amount of talent young Isaiah Rashad is surrounded by, he is destined for great things in his career.
The first thing that jumps out at me about Cilvia is how much I love the piano based production on his tracks. Although I was hoping for a rap feature or two from fellow TDE members, the hooks delivered by SZA give this project a lulling quality. Isaiah Rashad initially said he was making a mixtape for people leaving work at 6pm and not making it home until 6am, and has put together a wonderfully tranquilizing mixtape to roll one up to. My favorites include “Ronnie Drake”, “Heavenly Father” and “Shot U Down”. Isaiah showcases both his lyricism and singing abilities on Cilvia.
2014 is the year Top Dawg Entertainment proves they are going to be running the rap game for the next decade. Watch out for Oxymoron next month.
Here are a few music videos if you’re into that.
