SZA has been gearing up for the second release from her three part EP series of S, Z, and A. One year after her S EP , SZA has positioned herself among the most elite vocalists out there. Gaining recognition from Kendrick Lamar, this young talent from New Jersey was signed by the Lamar-led label Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE) last summer. Z will be SZA’s first release of a project since signing with the prestigious rap label, and will serve as Top Dawg’s first non rap release. SZA was the perfect addition to the rap crew as her hooks give TDE rappers (Kendrick Lamar, ScHoolboy Q, Ab-Soul, Isaiah Rashad, and Jay Rock) the flexibility of having a female sung hook on any song. Fellow newcomer, Isaiah Rashad, released his incredible debut mixtape, Cilvia, in January displaying how well of an addition SZA really is to arguably the best rap crew out there.
“Babylon” serves as the first single from SZA’s first TDE release, and has the polished quality possessed by nearly everything released through this label. “Babylon” was produced by Dj Dahi (with an intro produced by Mac Miller) and takes on an eerie minimal vibe reminiscent of Shlohmo‘s works as SZA emerges herself in a river, perhaps the river of Bablyon. Z will be landing on April 8, and I expect this forward thinking, lulling R&B artist to shake up the game.
