For all of you that aren’t familiar with “Bicycle Day” as it has became known, this is not simply a celebration surrounding the marijuana infused holiday of 4/20 but something a little more ingrained in the history books. The story goes that on April 19, 1943 Dr. Albert Hoffman performed a self-experiment to determine the true effects of LSD. When asking a laboratory assistant to escort him home they faced the fact that automobile transportation was limited during the wartime crisis at hand, their second option was to travel by bicycle, lets just say ha had quite the lengthy journey home. Long story short “Bicycle Day” got its name years later in DeKalb, IL., when a Northern Illinois University professor planned an event to celebrate this landmark achievement.
“… little by little I could begin to enjoy the unprecedented colors and plays of shapes that persisted behind my closed eyes. Kaleidoscopic, fantastic images surged in on me, alternating, variegated, opening and then closing themselves in circles and spirals, exploding in colored fountains, rearranging and hybridizing themselves in constant flux …”
– Dr. Albet Hoffman
